Collection of things
I’m gliding away on soapy heels.

I’m promising not to promise anymore.
I will not come around again.
And yes, your love is gone.

Two more Tattooine-like planets discovered orbiting double suns

Kepler-34b and Kepler-35b are two new examples of so-called circumbinary planets, joining the previously discovered Kepler-16b. In both of these new star systems, the double suns orbit each other, and the planets orbit the combined gravitational field of the two stars.

(A GIF I made from the video here.)

Tatooines are a dime a dozen these days! New question: How many house Skywalkers?

Can I live here please?

It is sometimes said that scientists are unromantic, that their passion to figure out robs the world of beauty and mystery. But is it not stirring to understand how the world actually works — that white light is made of colors, that color is the way we perceive the wavelengths of light, that transparent air reflects light, that in so doing it discriminates among the waves, and that the sky is blue for the same reason that the sunset is red? It does no harm to the romance of the sunset to know a little bit about it.

I’m thinking about about sugar houses today, the unique Eastern Canada and New England buildings in which maple syrup is produced. They’re also known as sap houses, sugar shacks, sugar shanties, sugar cabins, or cabanes à sucre in Québec. My mom’s extended family are farmers in Western New York — they call them shanties — and I grew up spending a few days each winter with older relatives while they boiled syrup, ate bacon and beans, played Euchre and drank whiskey. Nowadays, I very fond of these houses because of my memories.

I have not found a comprehensive photographic library detailing the history of sugar house architecture, but there are few pots of gold here and there.

The University of Vermont maintains a Maple Research Collection. There are many results if you search Google Images, too.

Have a sugar house? Please share.
